SmartXide DOT Laser

A Revolutionary Facial Resurfacing Laser.
The SmartXide DOT laser is a new innovation in carbon dioxide lasing technology. The carbon dioxide laser has been, since it was first introduced in 1991, the “gold standard” in skin resurfacing technology. Results have always been excellent. The original carbon dioxide lasing technique removed the entire skin surface down to a superficial depth, which resulted in a fairly lengthy recovery. The results were remarkable, however. SmartXide DOT technology offers results approximating those of the traditional carbon dioxide laser resurfacing, but the down time is minimal and complete recovery occurs in a matter of days. The SmartXide DOT, a fractionated ablative laser, has set a new standard for skin resurfacing and has become the treatment choice for reversing the effects of aging on the skin.
SmartXide DOT Laser
The DOT laser is a 30 watt, carbon dioxide-based laser with a 10,600 nm wavelength. A scanning head delivers the laser impulse in one of several available patterns. This allows the operating physician to individualize the treatment area for each patient. Within each pattern, 150-700 microns, pixilated dots of laser impact are created, each about 300 microns (0.003 mm) in size. The space between each dot, the depth of each dot and the length of time the laser beam stays in contact with the skin are all adjusted for the area of skin being treated
The SmartXide DOT is adjusted to maximize benefit for each of the different areas of the face being treated. Superficial problems, such as pigment disorders or mild wrinkles are treated with more distance between dots and lesser energy than deeper problems, such as scars and deep skin creases. These are treated with more closely placed dots, more energy, and, if needed, a second pass of the laser beams. The patient whose primary concern is overall skin laxity and moderate wrinkling is treated with energy densities somewhere between these two extremes. Again, treatment options and modalities will vary according to the treatment site, the degree of aging, pigmentation and the skin abnormality being treated, in addition to the patient’s desires and expectations.
Compared to Other Ablative Lasers
The size of the treatment dots varies from 120 to 1,250 microns. The average dot size is 300 microns. Other laser units offer heads with different spot sizes. SmartXide DOT offers surgical heads that allow the device to be used not only for skin resurfacing, but surgical incisions or ablations if needed. Unlike the Fraxel Repair laser, which features continuous tracking across the treatment area, SmartXide dot laser allows various patterns to complete the treatment.
Where Can SmartXide DOT Laser Be Used?
Unlike previous carbon dioxide laser treatments, which had been restricted to the face, SmartXide DOT laser can be used on many areas of the body including the face, eyelids, hands, elbows, and the décolleté. In addition to areas of loose skin, wrinkled skin, or even crepe paper-like skin, SmartXide DOT laser is helpful in treating such various skin conditions as scars, hyperpigmentation, and stretch marks (striae).
How Does SmartXide DOT Laser Actually Work?
The SmartXide DOT laser penetrates the outer layer of skin (epidermis) into the second layer of skin (the dermis). The dermis is the supporting structural layer of skin which contains most of the skin’s collagen. When the dermis is damaged by sun and environmental toxins, it creates the appearance of wrinkles, pigment changes and laxity. SmartXide DOT laser, by creating small columns of thermal damage to the dermis, sets in motion a repair process resulting in production of NEW collagen to replace the lased collagen. The end result is a tightening of skin, improvement of texture and color and decreased laxity.
How Does SmartXide DOT Laser Achieve Shorter Recovery Times Than its Predecessors?
Previous carbon dioxide ablative lasers vaporized the entire skin surface. Time required to heal from this procedure was somewhat lengthy and painful. Because the SmartXide DOT laser leaves normal, non-lased dermis surrounding each column of lased collagen, the regenerative time is dramatically diminished. This means there is abundant untouched collagen to regenerate new collagen, thereby shortening healing time dramatically.
What Are The Results Of SmartXide DOT Laser Treatment?
There is immediate visible shrinkage of the skin resulting in instantaneous skin tightening. More importantly, further improvements in skin tightness and collagen density occur as a result of collagen remodeling and begin about seven days after the treatment. These improvements will continue to occur for up to 9-12 months and are facilitated and substantially maintained by the use of Renova and Vivite products.
